The Mooney Show!

Today was a very exciting day in room 13! Today we recorded a piece for the radio show 'Mooney' on RTE Radio 1. The segment aired today at 3:45pm.
Our school was asked if we would be interested in recording a piece for radio about a prisoner of conscience. Amnesty International contacted our vice principal Ms Carroll, who in turn thought of our class! We were delighted to be asked.

We discussed the situation of a teacher from Indonesia called Johan. Johan has been jailed for life for taking part in a peaceful demonstration asking for his home province, Maluku, to be independent from Indonesia.  We talked about human rights and why this is very unfair for Johan and his family. The class wrote letters of support and well wishes which will be sent to Amnesty International and then forwarded on to Johan. Caitlin from Amnesty International was very impressed with the children's letters.

We then recorded our piece for radio. Catriona from RTE told us what we were going to do. She recorded a piece from Ms Carroll and then some more in our classroom. Some of the class read out their letters. It was great to see how radio recordings work outside the radio studio. Here are some photos from today and a link to the radio slot!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to all the students in room 13. We have already settled back into school life and are looking forward to what is sure to be a busy but exciting school year ahead.

Here are some reminders of  our class routines:

PE day is Monday. Children should wear their school tracksuit on Mondays only (unless otherwise told).

Morning break is a fruit or vegetable or yoghurt break.

Children's journal should  be signed each night when their homework is completed.

If a child has been absent a note explaining the absence should be sent into the teacher when they return to school.

I wish all the students in room 13 a very happy and successful sixth class experience!

Creative School Awards

On Saturday 9th June an award ceremony was held in the school hall.  Four classes showcased their 'Creative School Awards' projects to parents and members of the A.C.A.E. It was a fantastic morning.

Room 11's project centered around photography and how we can use this resource in other areas of the curriculum. Our project consisted of lots of different things such as photostories, story writing, poetry writing, history (comparing confirmation photos from 1988 and 2011 and history of photography), science (importance of light and making pinhole cameras) geography (map making) and visual arts which incorporated our work with another project we were involved with this year.

All the children in room 11 got involved in this project and truly deserved their award. 

Well done to all involved in the  'Creative School Awards' project: Room11, Room 13, Room 12 and Room 9!

Visiting Artists Day Two

Today we welcomed another two artists to room 11. Half the class worked with Mark Garry and the second half worked with Emma Haugh. Room 11 experienced another two hours of great fun and lots of new things. Many thanks to all involved today.
