BOOK WEEK 2013

Last week it was 'Book Week' in St. Catherine's. It was a great week and room 13 would like to thank Mr O' Sé for the debating competition, Ms Murphy for running the book fair, Mr McGrath and Mr Fahy for running the book swap and Ms Carrig and the literacy team for organising a super week!

The week began with displaying all the work the children had completed in the run up to book week. The children put great effort into all the competitions.
A selection of our book covers, poems and limericks.

On Monday author Derek Landy visited the school and gave a very interesting and entertaining talk. Afterwards he signed copies of his book. Room 13 were particularly delighted to see Derek visiting our school as we wrote the initial email inviting him to our book week.

On Thursday children's writer Liam Farrell visited St Catherine's. He spoke to fifth and sixth classes about how he plans a story. It was a very interesting talk and the children are now using Liam's advice and writing their own stories based on nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

It was dress up as a book character day on Friday. There were many different book characters to be seen in room 13. Well done everyone who made a great effort to dress up!

On Friday we also held the final of the book week debates. Room 13's team made up of Dayna, Gearóid and Kellie faced room 12's team. Both teams were excellent. Room 12's team won by a margin of 3 points. A big well done to all nine teams from room 11, 12 and 13 for a great week of debates and congratulations to the winners from Ms Deery's class.

That brings to an end the events of Book Week 2013. It was a great week.

Science

In January we explored how the ear works. We made models to show how our ears work.

We also looked at air resistance. We made parachutes and spinners to explore how air resistance works.
